Extensions and alterations to a coastal family home
The second phase of this project was the design and erection of a bespoke detached Oak frame Garage and Store.
We bought “Sunnybrook” in July 2011 knowing that the property required extensive work to upgrade and modernise the living area.
A7 Design was recommended to us and we arranged a meeting with the principal Andre Bisson on site to discuss our thoughts and to hear what would be in keeping with the area. Initially it was found the domestic curtilage was insufficient for our needs and Andre advised us that this would be the first part of our development which would require permission to extend and if granted we would then be able to give thought to the development as a whole.
That first meeting instilled confidence that A7 Design were the company we wanted to act on our behalf to provide a comprehensive architectural service.
Having engaged A7 Design, we had a number of meetings with Andre and Matt de Garis where we discussed our desire and wants of the property but above all, we wanted to maintain the “cottage” appearance but make good use of the original building footprint. We appreciated the extent of their working knowledge and their willingness to listen to us especially as I was keen to use more up to date forms of heating such as an air source heat pump and solar panels and as a result draft plans were drawn up for our consideration.
During this process we had discussions with Matt and Andre and minor alterations were made prior to detailed plans being prepared and submitted for consideration by environment and duly passed.
A7 also provide a tendering and project management service and we had no hesitation in engaging this service and Matt de Garis was to be in charge of the tendering process and then project manage the build on our behalf.
Detailed tenders were drawn up and submitted to a number of local builders. Matt provided us with detailed comparison of all tenders which helped us to choose our preferred builder.
J Meerveld and Sons Ltd was our chosen builder and we had a couple of meetings chaired by Matt with Brent Meerveld and Jez Thomas who was to be the site manager.
On 23rd July the work commenced. As with all major renovation work unforeseen problems arise, the benefit of having Matt as project manager meant that the pressure of trying to resolve the issue was on his shoulders and we found him to be very diligent in offering us advice and costing’s to overcome any problem. The staff from J Meerveld and Sons Ltd. and in particular Jez Thomas were also very helpful in advising us on the best practical way to overcome any of the problems encountered.
We also had occasions where it was found that what we wanted on plan wasn’t practical during the build, again the advice given enabled any alterations to be made quickly and with very little disruption to the build schedule and cost.
During the whole time of the build we had plenty of communication with both Matt and the building team and were grateful for the regular site meetings and also the freedom to visit during working hours.
Our completed “new” house was handed back to us in April 2013. The finished build is a credit to the design and craftsmanship of all those involved. We have a fantastic light and airy modern home which has retained and in some ways improved the traditional cottage look. Retaining the original granite front which had been covered in plaster for 50 years was on the recommendation of the team as the quality of the granite was so good and it looks fantastic!
The quality of the workmanship is a credit the team at J Meerveld and Sons Ltd and their choice of sub-contractors, who delivered on time and within the agreed budget.
Should we ever require future building work we would have no hesitation in approaching J Meerveld and Sons Ltd for a quotation.
We have no hesitation in recommending Andre, Matt and the team at A7 Design Ltd who provided us with a truly professional approach with the personal touch from concept to completion.
